New Year’s Resolutions

2019 is the start of my 26th year of existence! I can’t believe how every new year seems to come and go faster and I expect it to only go quicker the older I get. With the reality of how quick my life is passing me by, I have set some very ambitious goals for myself in 2019! Taken from The 10x Rule by Grant Cardone:

“I suggest that you become obsessed about the things you want; otherwise, you are going to spend a lifetime being obsessed with making up excuses as to why you didn't get the life you wanted.”

Are you obsessed to get what you want? Can you identify something in your life that may be impeding you from accomplishing your deepest desires? One of the greatest traits I’ve gained from my 4 years of door-to-door sales is staying committed even when times are tough. From knocking in the pouring rain to dealing with a day of constant rejection, there’s very few things that will teach you the rare skill of “obsessing” the way D2D sales will. From these experiences, I know that I will accomplish anything I set my mind to, no matter how hard it seems in the moment.

For all you who want to accomplish your New Year’s Resolution I will show you how I currently set my goals, review them, and ensure I’m obsessing over them so I can be accountable to myself. Let’s dive in!

Setting Goals

After graduating high school, I attended my community college to earn my Associates Degree so I could transfer to a university. While attending, I remember my public speaking professor taught how he would breakdown his speeches into its most basic themes, goal statements, and key points. He had a systematic process for preparing his presentations and it allowed him to make sure whatever content he included remained relevant and on task. I’ve taken his template and have modified it for the various types of presentations, reports, and analysis, I have worked on. More than anything, it has helped keep my writing focused and organized. Taken from his template, below is the following format I use for creating my New Year’s Resolutions.

Personal Goals 2019 Template

Mission Statement - 1 sentence that communicates your objective clearly and powerfully

Goals - The individual goals you wish to accomplish. I use bullet points to highlight each item.

Strategy - How you plan to accomplish each bulleted item. For every goal, there should be a thought out solution you will use to follow through with your goals

Timeline - When do you plan to accomplish the goal? Is this a daily, weekly, monthly, or one-time goal? How often will you review that goal and strategy?

Ways to Stay on Track - List ways to help you remember to stay focused on your goals (i.e. reminders in your phone, dry-erase calendar on fridge, someone who will hold you accountable, etc.)

Consequences - If you don’t accomplish the goal you have set for yourself by the set timeline should there be a consequence? If yes, ask yourself, “What is a reasonable consequence that will motivate me but not hurt my motivation?”

This is just one of many ways for you to analyze your goals. I’m sure there’s crazy matrixes and software programs that are way more technical than this, but so far I’ve really liked this and it’s straightforward enough for me to stay focused and highlight what it is I’m wanting to accomplish and how I’m going to do it. I’m confident it can help you too.

Reviewing Goals

A goal is only as good as its follow-up. You can quote that if you want 😉 But seriously, us humans are intimately aware with the concept of setting a goal only to let it fall apart shortly thereafter. I wish I could honestly say I’ve learned how to overcome this urge to not follow through, but I still struggle. However, I’ve learned a few tricks that have helped me do better at accomplishing goals. Here are a few:

Setting Timelines - Oftentimes we just expect ourselves to accomplish a goal without allocating the necessary time to it. So, determine how much time that goal needs, when you’re going to set aside that time, and when this task will be complete. Doing these 3 things will help you realistically start your game plan.

Staying Accountable - With each goal, I determine how often I need to check-in to see how I’m doing with them. The most frequent accountability time frames for me are weekly, monthly, and quarterly. During these accountability sessions, I review my original goal, what I’ve accomplished and measure my efforts as best as possible to see if I’m on the right track. Normally, I have a few improvements I need to make. I analyze what they are, how I’ll do better, and get back to work.

Using Your Spouse/Close Friend - One of the greatest benefits of being married is you have a companion who knows you intimately. They know your strengths and weaknesses and often give you the most sincere criticism you need to hear. My wife knows my goals and helps me stay focused on them by asking me how I’m doing. She will often listen as I review how I’m doing with each one. Using a third party to give you feedback and input for ways you can improve will help you tremendously. If you’re not married, find a friend or family member who you can talk to about your goals. You’ll be motivated to make improvements knowing you have someone who’ll check-in with you.

As a kid my Dad had me memorize the following quote:

“Stick to your task ‘till it stick to you;

Beginners are many, but enders are few.

Honor, power, place and praise

Will always come to the one who stays.

Stick to your task ‘till it sticks to you;

Bend at it, sweat at it, smile at it, too;

For out of the bend and the sweat and the smile

Will come life’s victories after a while.”

Obsess for your Success

Once you’ve set your goals and have plans to stay accountable with them, the only thing left to do is obsess until you’re a success. Don’t give up when the hard days come or when you get set back. It’s normal to not have things always go as planned. As long as you’re putting in your best efforts, your percentage of success will increase daily! When thinking about my first year selling compared to my last, my rate of success improves year upon year. It’s exciting to see where I came from and where I’m at today. The same will happen for you as you stay determined to accomplish your goals!

I can’t wait for 2019 and plan to make it my greatest year yet! How about you?? Let me know what your goals are for 2019.
