"Once you've set your goals and have plans to stay accountable with them, the only thing left to do is obsess until you're a success." — Tyler Evertsen

New Year's Resolutions

With the reality of how quick my life is passing me by, I have set some very ambitious goals for myself. Taken from The 10x Rule by Grant Cardone: "I suggest that you become obsessed about the things you want; otherwise, you are going to spend a lifetime being obsessed with making up excuses as to why you didn't get the life you wanted."

One of the greatest traits I've gained from my years of door-to-door sales is staying committed even when times are tough. From knocking in the pouring rain to dealing with a day of constant rejection, there's very few things that will teach you the rare skill of "obsessing" the way D2D sales will. From these experiences, I know that I will accomplish anything I set my mind to, no matter how hard it seems in the moment.

Setting Goals

After graduating high school, I attended my community college to earn my Associates Degree. I remember my public speaking professor taught how he would break down his speeches into their most basic themes, goal statements, and key points. He had a systematic process for preparing his presentations. I've taken his template and modified it for creating my New Year's Resolutions.

Personal Goals Template

  • Mission Statement — 1 sentence that communicates your objective clearly and powerfully
  • Goals — The individual goals you wish to accomplish. Use bullet points to highlight each item.
  • Strategy — How you plan to accomplish each bulleted item. For every goal, there should be a thought-out solution.
  • Timeline — When do you plan to accomplish the goal? Is this a daily, weekly, monthly, or one-time goal?
  • Ways to Stay on Track — List ways to help you remember to stay focused on your goals.
  • Consequences — If you don't accomplish the goal by the set timeline, should there be a consequence? Ask yourself, "What is a reasonable consequence that will motivate me but not hurt my motivation?"

Reviewing Goals

A goal is only as good as its follow-up. Us humans are intimately aware with the concept of setting a goal only to let it fall apart shortly thereafter. Here are a few tricks that have helped me do better at accomplishing goals:

Setting Timelines — Oftentimes we just expect ourselves to accomplish a goal without allocating the necessary time to it. Determine how much time that goal needs, when you're going to set aside that time, and when this task will be complete.

Staying Accountable — With each goal, I determine how often I need to check-in to see how I'm doing. The most frequent accountability time frames for me are weekly, monthly, and quarterly. During these sessions, I review my original goal, what I've accomplished, and measure my efforts to see if I'm on the right track.

Using Your Spouse or Close Friend — One of the greatest benefits of being married is you have a companion who knows you intimately. My wife knows my goals and helps me stay focused on them by asking me how I'm doing. Using a third party to give you feedback and input for ways you can improve will help you tremendously.

As a kid my Dad had me memorize the following quote:

"Stick to your task 'till it sticks to you; Beginners are many, but enders are few. Honor, power, place and praise will always come to the one who stays."

Obsess for Your Success

Once you've set your goals and have plans to stay accountable with them, the only thing left to do is obsess until you're a success. Don't give up when the hard days come or when you get set back. It's normal to not have things always go as planned. As long as you're putting in your best efforts, your percentage of success will increase daily! When thinking about my first year selling compared to my last, my rate of success improves year upon year. It's exciting to see where I came from and where I'm at today. The same will happen for you as you stay determined to accomplish your goals!
